Step Back in Time: A Day of Vintage Baseball and Community Fun in Santa Cruz
Baseball fans and history buffs alike are invited to step back in time on Saturday, August 2, when Santa Cruz Seals team up with the Bay Area Vintage Base Ball League for a one-of-a-kind 3-game exhibition and community fundraiser. The event will take place at Harvey West Park, Field #6, and promises a fun-filled afternoon of 19th-century baseball, local flavor, and support for youth sports.
The day kicks off at 12:00 noon with a free match between two Bay Area Vintage Base Ball League teams: the San Francisco Pelicans and the San Jose Dukes Vintage Base Ball Club. The action continues at 3:30 pm with a showdown between the Pelicans’ All-Stars and local faves, the Santa Cruz Seals, with a suggested donation of $5 at the gate.
What sets this event apart? The games will be played according to 1886 rules, using period-appropriate equipment, uniforms, and game style. Spectators can expect an authentic look into the sport’s early days.
“We’re honored to partner with the Bay Area Vintage Base Ball League to bring this unique vintage baseball experience to Santa Cruz,” said Ken Castro, President of Santa Cruz PONY Baseball. “This event is a fantastic opportunity for our community to come together, celebrate the history of baseball, and support our young athletes.”
After the vintage games, stick around at 5:30 pm for the Santa Cruz Seals annual Reunion Game where the 2025 team will battle it out with Seals alumni from the past 20 years.
In addition to the games, the event will feature a community fundraiser, complete with raffles and a snack stand, all in support of Santa Cruz PONY Baseball’s youth programs and field improvements. Local businesses are encouraged to donate raffle prizes such as gift cards, merchandise, or experiences. Donors will receive recognition through event promotions and social media shoutouts.
Santa Cruz PONY Baseball has been serving youth ages 12 to 19 since 1955, helping young athletes build skills, confidence, and community. The upcoming vintage baseball event is not only a celebration of the sport’s rich history but also a vital fundraiser that supports the future of local youth baseball.
